Orla McManus & BAPTCARE
Story
I'm taking part in the 2015 Melbourne Marathon Festival and to make the 'bucket list' event all the more worthwhile, I'm keen to raise some awareness
around a truly unique and gorgeous little girl 'Orla McManus' and one of the many organisations that provides support to Orla and her family - BAPTCARE.
For those of you that don't know Orla, she is the 4 year old daughter of my cousin Flick and her husband Ed. Orla has a rare metabolic disease called Alpha-mannosidosis (A-Mann) that affects one in a million people. One of the hardest things for Orla and her family is the limited knowledge about A-Mann and the constant navigation of unchartered waters and uncertainty in Orla's life.
In Orla's first four years of life, she has endured more appointments, therapy and operations, including a bone marrow transplant followed by months of home isolation than most people could even allow themselves to imagine.
Recently BAPTCARE supplied Orla with funds for a customised bike so she can get out an enjoy the sunshine with her family, along with personal hire of a hydrotherapy pool at Villa Maria and lessons at riding for the disabled. These types of experiences and equipment for children with special needs, improves the quality of life of the child and their families.
